Women in Djenne Market
"This painting was inspired by a photograph I took. I couldn’t just point the camera and snap the shot. When I first saw the scene, I realized I would need to round a corner to avoid them anticipating my approach. I had to carefully frame the shot before they became aware of me. They did look up after I took the photo, but by then, my camera was no longer aimed at them. I believe this is the only photograph I took in all of Africa where it would not have been welcomed, and they likely would have covered their faces if they had known.
The painting was exhibited at the JCC along with other works and abstracts at the time. It received positive comments and praise. Teri and others appreciated the painting even before it was fully completed, commenting that I could have left it in its earlier stage with the simple abstract figures. After finishing this piece, I went on to complete the other painting referenced in the collection."
