Landscape—Patagonia, Chile
Size: 30“ x 40“
"The scene is the same as the one with the rider in the smaller picture upstairs. However, this picture was painted almost 2 decades later when we were reviewing our slides for the Smithsonian. These are huasos, Chilean cowboys rounding up their horses at sunrise. They sit in the back of the saddle, a feature I didn’t really notice until a worker at the house pointed that out from the older, smaller painting upstairs. He knew from the painting that it was from South America—amazing.
There is a lot of work in this picture, particularly to bring out the three horses on the left, and also to get enough detail on the rider. I consulted with Joe Matt on the horse carrying the rider as well as the other horses and all the paraphernalia. Joe knew about the kind of horse used there. He confirmed that everything was correct. He was amazed about how a few tiny features painted in the face could give it the detail needed. I also spent a lot of time bringing out the rocks. Shane Neal commented that the perhaps the white horse on the right had too much detail. Actually, I was impressed with my brush work there. (That can be a problem in itself as there can be too much attention on a part of the painting.) I liked the brushwork of the green and yellow grass contrasted with the warmer trail. decided not to frame this recently, partly because of the lack of space."
