Courtyard, Mali 2000
Size: 24” x 36”
"When I began painting this, Linda wondered why I would be painting a bunch of sand. It must have looked like a monotone to her, This is why a painting can be so much more powerful than a photograph. I saw the multiple tones and the light and shadow coming through the picture and over the stone, which gives it a sculptural effect, plus the lady in blue. Notice also how the walls and wood beam frame the painting.
This piece was exhibited at University School. I could’ve sold this picture many times over. A lady at University School was upset that it had NFS on it. An art dealer told me that if it hadn’t had a 2000 date on the painting, he would’ve assumed that it had been painted at least a century earlier."
